- Move the sliding arm of the speculum to the closed position.
- Carefully insert the curved blades under the margins of the upper and lower eyelids.
- Move the sliding arm to open the eyelids to the desired spacing and release it.
- Utilize the depressor to assist in visualization of the eye.
- Once the exam is completed, slide the arm back to the closed position and remove the curved blades from the eyelid margins.
- Discard the used speculum and depressor in appropriate waste disposal.
- For bilateral examinations, repeat the above steps with a second speculum and depressor.
