- Isolate the teeth using a rubber dam, prepare the tooth cavity during pulp capping and /or extirpate the pulp to the desired extent during pulpotomy procedures.
- After the preparation of tooth cavity, clean and dry the cavity.
- Dispense Calcium Hydroxide powder onto a clean glass slab and mix the powder with DM water/saline using a mixing spatula. The powder liquid ratio ranges from 1:1 to 1:3 W/V depending on the indication of use to prepare a moderately stiff paste.
- Introduce the paste into the prepared tooth cavity / pulp chamber / root canal.
- Fill/close the tooth cavity with a temporary filling material and recall the patient for observation at 2 week intervals until the desired result is attained. Change the primary dressing with a new mix of paste at every follow up visit or within a maximum of 3 weeks, without damaging the tooth structure or vital pulp tissue.
- Using sound clinical judgment, continue to recall the patient and monitor the progress of the pulp capping / apexification, changing the dressing as required.
- The tooth cavity can be filled with final restorative materials once the desired secondary dentine is deposited in deep cavities, after the pulp capping procedure.
- In young teeth needing apexification, the dressing may need to be changed more frequently untill the apical bridge is formed. Once the Apexification is complete endodontic therapy can be initiated.
